It depends on your condition. Osteopaths focus on the body's structure, using hands-on techniques to improve mobility, circulation, and overall function. They are often beneficial for general musculoskeletal pain, postural issues, and tension-related problems.
Physiotherapists specialise in diagnosing and treating injuries, using exercise, manual therapy, and rehabilitation techniques. If you have a sports injury, post-surgical recovery needs, or a specific movement dysfunction, a physio may be more appropriate.
In our clinic, our Osteopaths and Physiotherapists are all highly trained in treating all kinds of injuries or pain, with everyone able to use hands-on treatment, as well as rehabilitation exercise as needed.
The number of sessions needed varies depending on the condition being treated, its severity, and how your body responds to treatment. Some patients experience significant relief after one or two sessions, while others may need ongoing treatment over several weeks or months. Your practitioner will discuss your treatment plan and expected duration during your initial consultation
No, you do not need a referral from your GP to see an Osteopath or Physiotherapist in the UK. You can book an appointment directly with either. However, some private health insurance policies may require a GP referral for reimbursement, so it’s a good idea to check with your insurance provider if applicable.
During your first appointment, the practitioner will take a detailed medical history and ask about your symptoms and lifestyle. They will conduct a physical examination, which may involve you performing simple movements and the practitioner using their hands to examine your posture, spine, and muscles. Based on the assessment, they will discuss a treatment plan tailored to your needs and conduct hands-on treatment during the first session.
In the UK, Osteopaths must complete a recognised masters degree in osteopathy, which typically takes four to five years and includes both academic study and over 1,000 hours of clinical training. They must also be registered with the General Osteopathic Council (GOsC), the regulatory body that ensures practitioners meet high standards of competence and professionalism. You can verify an osteopath’s registration status on the GOsC website.
